A case study with SecondMuse on Business Matching and Startup Expansion

We sat down with Kintan Ayunda, Senior Associate at SecondMuse to discuss how Greenhouse supported Ocean Plastic Prevention Accelerator (OPPA) by SecondMuse and their portfolio of startups with business matching, market research, and workshops. All startups were expanding or testing Surabaya, Indonesia as a potential market for their plastic prevention solutions.

How long have you been in business?

SecondMuse is over a decade old and has been operational since 2017 in Indonesia and the Ocean Plastic Prevention Accelerator (OPPA) project started in 2018.

How many employees do you have?

Globally, we are 60+ people. The Surabaya team is a small powerhouse consisting of 5 people.

What challenges and objectives led you to look for a solution like Greenhouse?

Managing an accelerator program with startups from all over the world we run different projects that happen to be going on at the same time. These projects offer different things that need great preparation beforehand, to name a few legal support, market research, fundraising coaching, business matching and business development initiatives to help all startups participating in OPPA. The challenge that we had is we are not the master of everything, and we need extra hands to help make our vision happen. Therefore we are looking for a partner that can help us in delivering value to our program participants. Not just any partner, but a partner that we can rely on to deliver work up to our expectations and standard.

Did you explore other solutions prior to this that did not work out? If so, what happened?

We did contact other companies that offer similar services like Greenhouse. But Greenhouse is the one that is really responsive and being very helpful and flexible with the options of solutions that suit our needs. Therefore we know that we want to work together with them because we know they will help us succeed in our project

How is Greenhouse helping you, and your portfolio of startups, with the OPPA program?

Most recently, two of our portfolio startups needed to do several market research projects in Surabaya in order to expand successfully across Indonesia. Greenhouse helped our portfolio by connecting them with and coordinating multiple service providers to make sure the market research will hit internal deadlines and help our startups’ expansion, and potentially fundraise.

In the past, Greenhouse helped us in connecting our portfolio of startups with experienced experts in different fields. Greenhouse arranged a series of workshops for our portfolio startups with relevant experts on the topic of grants for social enterprises, venture capital, and in general fundraising topics like how to fundraise in Indonesia.

What were the results that came from using Greenhouse? How did we help you solve your challenge/s?

Greenhouse has been helping us and our portfolio of startups by coordinating multiple service providers and partners to deliver on workshops, market studies and pre-arranged business matching with potential clients of our portfolio.

All those services were delivered in an efficient and professional manner, the process has been nothing but smooth. In fact, both projects were delivered much faster than we thought it would be possible. In turn, that gave us the opportunity to put our energy to speed up our program execution.

What are you excited about moving forward?

To see our portfolio’s startups progressing by leveraging the results of both market studies and the insights that they got from the fundraising workshops.
